My Pet Story
I wanted a dog. My wife said that getting a dog while living in a small apartment would be cruel. A dog needed room to run around and play. She made promise to me that once we moved into a house with a yard, I could get a dog. I made her keep that promise.
In early 2001, my wife Amy and I moved into our first house. We didn’t own that house, but it was the first time since our marriage some seven years prior that we were able to afford to rent a house and leave apartment living behind. For a while, apartments are okay. That is, of course, unless you want a pet. Pet deposits are expensive.
We found a great rent house. It had almost half an acre of land, fenced, and a dog kennel in the back yard. Perfect! My wife, although pretending not to be excited about having a pet, willingly participated in planning for our pet. As soon-to-be parents do, we researched everything from what kind of dog we wanted (she wanted a large dog and I wanted a small dog) to what they ate and how much it would cost. We bought a book on Basset hounds. We figured that would be about the best compromise between a small and a large dog.
I began to scour the classified section of our local newspaper. I found the section entitled “Pets for Sale”. Lo, and behold, there was an ad for Basset hounds. I made and inquiry, and before long, we paid a visit to a couple who were selling Basset pups.
I was shocked to see that the breed can get quite large. Just because they are vertically challenged, they make up for it! Then, we saw the puppies.
